The Tea Party Strike That Never Was; Tea Party Convention Here We Come!

I remember hearing about a Tea Party strike planned for Jan. 20, 2010. Back in late December and early January it received a great deal of media coverage.

So what the heck happened?

The great, sure-to-show-the-strength-of-the-Tea Party strike of 2010 never happened.

Welcome to the world of populist movements where many different talking heads try to pull the "movement" in different directions. Organization is difficult at best and long term sustainability rare. The Tea Party is already showing signs of being pulled in multiple, different directions.

I mention this only because the of the forthcoming Tea Party convention, Feb. 4-6. The Tea Party convention will restrict media coverage of their event. Way to go supressing the freedom of the press Tea Partiers! I wonder what other rights found in the Bill of Rights will be restricted at their convention. Maybe the Tea Partiers will search some convention goers without a warrant, detain others without probable cause and force other conventioneers to quarter troops while attending.

Scheduled to appear/speak include but, are not limited to, Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann.

Plus, the $500.00+ per ticket price tag to attend all the Tea Party convention events sure seems steep for a grassroots, every-person, working class movement. And that price doesn't include the travel and lodging for out-of-towners. How many "real Americans" can afford that I wonder?

That is if the convention actually happens. I mean, remember, the Jan. 20 Tea Party strike was going to happen too. So herd them cats away from the Jan. 20 Tea Party strike and toward the Feb. 4 Tea Party convention!

More on the Tea Party convention to come.

Update: Bachmann and one other Representative, Marsha Blackburn, have backed out on the Tea Partiers. And the convention is apparently having trouble selling tickets to Palin's keynote address.

OK, now that Bachmann has backed out will Palin actually show up? What wheels off moments will happen during the convention ? Please, comment below.

Scary, Part 1

In case you missed it somehow, Michele Bachmann lead some conservative protesters to Capitol Hill last week. And of course Bachmann and Sean Hannity exaggerated the number of protesters that attended. Hannity even used footage from Glenn Beck's 9/12 protest to make it appear that more people attended last week than actually did. And Jon Stewart was there to hilariously call out Bachmann and Hannity:

Rep. Bachmann: Taxes, Slavery, Health Care & Wrist Cutting, Oh My!

*The sad thing is that I'm just paraphrasing from a speech Rep. Bachmann (MN) recently gave. And I'm only barely exaggerating what she said. I swear. I think she meant that people should make a covenant, slit their wrists and become blood brothers in the fight against health insurance reform. That's not much less crazy.

Usually the "blood brother" thing, if I remember my old cowboy movies correctly, meant cutting a finger or the palms of the hands and then shaking on it. If people do what she says and slit their wrists then, I sure hope they have some type of health care or they might be dead blood brothers.

Sidenote: Rep. Bachmann is the gift that keeps on giving, and giving, and giving, and giving.

Rep. Michele Bachmann Cries "Tyranny"!

Not only has Rep. Bachmann (MN) claimed that Obama's environment bill is tantamount to "tyranny," but she also wanted to remind those who listen to right-wing radio that Thomas Jefferson thought, "having a revolution every now and then is a good thing." Jefferson, of course, was talking about armed revolution immediately after our independence from Britain. That was certainly a different time. It was not a time and place like today where people are killing those with whom they disagree, like certain doctors, those at armed forces recruitment centers, or those at Holocaust museums. One would like to think that Rep. Bachmann wouldn't fan flames on the far fringes of the right, fires that apparently are already burning well enough on their own. But, that would assume that Rep. Bachmann thinks. And that's an awfully big assumption.

Side note: This is not the first time Rep. Bachmann has made wild, sensational, unsubstantiated allegations apparently in an attempt to keep her name in the media and especially among the far right ring media. For example, during last year's election cycle she sounded like she was channeling the ghost of Joseph McCarthy.

"GOP Forms Circular Firing Squad"*

Or, "hey, that hurts when you stick that knife in my back."

*title of this post taken from the title of a great article on politico.com:

Maybe some of the Republicans are tired of McCain the Maverick. By the way, I'm starting to think that Erratic/Maverick McCain is more correct in describing his campaigning style.

So the latest bad news for McCain is from his own party (supposedly it's his party, but you wouldn't know it from recent headlines). The National Republican Senatorial Committe is running an ad with the central premise that if Senator Dole loses her particular Senate seat the Democrats will control "all branches of govenment," and "have a blank check." So it seems they are assuming an Obama victory.
So McCain's fellow Republican Senatorial leadership is saving their own skin, by essentially advertising, "hey, Obama's going to win, so at least balance him out with a Republican Senator." Ow.

McCain's love/hate relationship with his own party may be why none of Bush's big 527 supporters are going to bat for McCain this election cycle.

Lastly, here's another example of the animosity between McCain and his party. The very conservative Washington Times ran a story yesterday titled, "McCain Lambasts Bush Years." McCain takes dead aim at W. and the Republican controlled Congress (of which he was and is a member) instead of going after Obama and the Dems that have controlled Congress the last two years. I'm not sure what McCain's strategy is here. Is going after the Republican base's favorite son, W., and the Republican Congress from 2000-2006 in a newspaper only the Republican base really reads a good idea? Is it telling when the Whitehouse spokesperson has to defend the sitting Republican president against the Republican nominee?

This is yet another example of a campaign that is all over the place, attacking everyone and everything, with no clear message or theme. In other words, classic Erratic/Maverick McCain.

Side note: At least the RNC is still finacially supporting McCain in his campaign. Representative, Michele "Joe McCarthy," Bachmann is no longer receiving money from the RNC. Ouch.

Side side note: If you're having trouble figuring out who to vote for go to:
and take their quiz.

Side side side note: The below link from MoveOn.org helps Obama supporters encourage others to actually get out and vote otherwise the loss of the election could very well be their fault. At the very least it's funny:

Michele Bachmann: the New Joe McCarthy?

Channeling Joe McCarthy - Have you no decency, ma'am, at long last ?
Michele Bachmann is a Republican U.S. Representative from the state of Minnesota. Below is a link to a full blog post with part of the interview she had on Oct. 17 with Chris Matthews. In that interview she called Obama, "Anti-American," and called on the media to investigate the U.S. House and Senate to ferret out other "Anti-American" members. I am not the first to say this but, she is raising the specter of Joe McCarthy and one of the darkest times in our county's history by calling for another witch hunt in to so-called "Anti-Americans". Whatever her intentions by making these careless and incendiary comments, they have had an impact that she could not have foreseen. See the link for that consequence.
Is this indicative of the the general Republican response to opponents with whom they disagree? Plainly, the Republican mantra, whether it be their vice-presidential candidate or Ms. Bachmann, as examples, appears to be at times and at its worst, "if you don't agree with me you must be Anti-American." That type of rote, circular argument (if one can call it an argument without being insulting to those that actually want to have a meaningful debate and trade constructive arguments on issues of substance) is, I would assert, the epitome of "Anti-American." Perhaps one should ask, "have you nothing better to offer to the discourse, ma'am?" But, I again return to that fateful question asked of Joseph McCarthy decades earlier by Joseph Welch that essentially derailed McCarthy and his sad, witch hunting hearings. Specifically, to Ms. Bachmann and those of her ilk I ask, "have you no sense of decency, [ma'am], at long last? Have you left no sense of decency?"
